I had a question from Adrian regarding how to rank better in Google.
Some SEO advice he had been given previously was “your website has to be popular to get popular”. Not very helpful right.
What I think this person was trying to say is you need inks back to your site.
You need your website URL (ie www.powerhouseonlinemarketing.com.au) on other peoples websites. Goggle sees this as a “vote” for your site, with the logic that “well if this other website thinks www.powerhouseonlinemarketing.com.au is worth linking to…. then it must be ok and trustworthy.
But then there is the next step. A little more “ninja”. You have to tell google what your site is about! You do this by using a thing called anchor text. So lets say I wanted to rank in Google for “Online Marketing” . I need to tell Google that my site is about online marketing.
This is how I do it.
I get my link on another site, using the anchor text “online marketing”.
So instead of my link looking like this:
www.powerhouseonlinemarketing.com.au
It will look like this:
Online Marketing
(You will see if you click on the link you will go to my website)
So now Google sees these links…. each link I have Google has more trust in my site…. and it tells Google that my page is about “online marketing” so it will rank it better for that term.
Of course, depending on how competitive the phrase is, and how many links you have, and the quality of those links, it is going to take some time and effort to rank well for a term.
But you will probably over estimate what you can do in a month, but under estimate what you can do in a year. So get cracking. The key is consistency.
There are some other things you need to know to make this work well such as:
- Linking to trustworthy sites
- Linking to relevant sites
- How to find pages to link to
- Having varied anchor text
- Making sure your links stay long term
But I will need to cover them in some more posts……
For the moment, this information should give you a good start on how to rank better in Google.
